This meeting is named after a highly respected Leeds Ophthalmologist. Originally a Liverpudlian, Brian Harcourt studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, and undertook military service in the RAF. He trained in Ophthalmology at the High Holborn branch of Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Developing an interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology at an early stage, he was respected for his positive character and intellectual nature. He was an imposing and forthright speaker, well-liked, and commanded great respect in our department. Unfortunately, in the year he became President of the Ophthalmological Society of the United Kingdom (in 1987), he developed pancreatic carcinoma, and died shortly after his diagnosis was evident, aged 53.

An annual Ophthalmology meeting is held in Yorkshire and dedicated to his name.
